As you all know, last week was bitter sweet as I announced that I have accepted the Superintendent position with Elba Central School.  I am confident that Mrs. Paolini will be an asset to Cosgrove while she is interim principal.  I have appreciated her leadership, collaboration and support as our Director of Curriculum and Instruction.  Please know that I have loved being Principal of Cosgrove and am forever grateful for the relationships that have I have had with students, parents and staff.

We hold our first round of parent conferences on Thursday and parents were contacted by our staff if there was a need to meet.  It is so important for students to be part of the conversation that will ultimately improve their performance.  As the end of the first quarter rapidly approaches, be sure to check Infinite Campus to ensure your child is getting their assignments in to their teachers.

Yesterday kicked off Red Ribbon Week.  A huge thank you to the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports team for having announcements, dress theme days, and activities ready for our students and staff.  In addition, our 8th grade students will be meeting with the high school Choice Leaders for their first meeting of the year.  This program will focus on the transition from 8th to 9th grade throughout the year.  In addition, Mr. Centola, Mrs. Woodard, Mrs. Robinson and our district Drug and Alcohol Counselor will be having an assembly for our 7th graders focusing on the dangers of vaping on Friday at 1:00 p.m.  Parents are welcome to join this panel discussion to learn more about this new trend in tobacco-less smoking.

In other upcoming events, we are trying to bring back our Activity Nights and our first one is for 6th and 7th grade students this Friday night.  Tickets can be purchased at the Greeter’s Desk for $8.00.  We three inflatable obstacle courses and bounce houses for students to enjoy from 6:30-8:30.  We are currently in the process of creating a special activity night for our 8th graders as well.  Our Festival of Nations event is coming up on Friday, November 2nd.  We will have almost 20 countries represented starting at 6:30.  We will start in the auditorium and then transition to the cafeteria to learn more about the countries represented.  There will be food tastings and kids will be able to complete a passport by visiting the different countries.

On the following week, our students will be going to the high school on Thursday, November 8th  first period to see portions of the this year’s high school musical, “The Tipsy Chaperone.”  I love seeing the talented performers and Cosgrove alumni!  Our musical, “The Little Mermaid” will be in March and we have so many students already asking about how they can showcase their singing, dancing, and acting skills.

As the fall modified sports season comes to a close next week, I wanted to say how much I enjoyed visiting games throughout this season.  A special thanks to the coaches who have prepared our students this fall.  Most importantly, I loved seeing the sportsmanship and the teamwork that was displayed by our student athletes.  We will continue to hold firm on our extracurricular activities eligibility policy throughout the year.

One last reminder for 8th grade parents, the last day to secure a spot on the Boston Trip is Friday, October 26th, at 3:00 p.m.  The waiting list will start at 3:01.  Please make sure that a check, cash or money order gets to Mr. Alley Room 810.  If you need more information or couldn’t attend the parent evening, please go to http://cosgrove.spencerportschools.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_432870/File/Boston%20Parent%20Information%20Packet.pdf
